NEXT LAB WARMS UP FOR ITS SECOND EDITION AND CONFIRMS THE DATES

Next Lab, the initiative that connects art and technology in the animation and digital content industry, will be held again in Madrid in early 2022 and will feature a workshop, an event and an online platform.

The Community of Madrid, through the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports, is once again the main sponsor in order to discover new talent and promote the most advanced animation production from a technical and narrative point of view.

After the success of its first edition, where 7 animation projects managed to make their teasers in record time and using new technologies, the call for projects for its 2022 edition will be opened soon. Out of this call will come the workshop participants, which will repeat the structure from the last edition with an online phase from January 10th to February 20th; and a in-person phase to be held from February 21st to 24th. The event, for its part, will take place on February 25th and 26th in Madrid.

One of the great novelties is the support from Planeta Junior. The company, leader in Europe in the creation and commercialization of entertainment for the whole family, joins the event for its next edition. As announced exclusively in the Next Lab presentation at the 13th edition of the Weird Market animation event, Planeta Junior will select and support one of the animation projects participating in the workshop to promote new ways of working in animation using disruptive technologies.

And this was not the only news revealed in Segovia, as two of the projects participating in the first edition of Next Lab returned home with an award from Weird Market 2021. “Titan Tofu” by María Luquero, received the award for Best Young Creator Series Project, with a free professional accreditation for the next edition of Annecy-MIFA, while the short film “Roped” by Carmen Córdoba won the Movistar + Short Film Project Award. The award is endowed with the acquisition of the emission rights of the short film by Movistar + and an amount of 9,000 euros for a period of 2 years (unlimited number of passes), being the first year exclusively for the aforementioned channel. In addition, the work will be officially released in the 2022 or 2023 edition of this market. “Roped” is the second short film by the Andalusian filmmaker, a work that has raised great expectations after accumulating more than a hundred awards with her debut feature: “Roberto”.

The last edition had the main sponsorship of the Community of Madrid; the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, Enisa, Annecy Festival and Weird Market; and the support of ICAA, Tangram Solutions, HP, Welaw, Clan VR and Real or Virtual.
