MASTERS OF VR ANIMATION: NICK LADD

With Canadian VR artist and animator, founding member of the Virtual Animation community. Conference in which we will learn about his most recent work (“Namoo”, a short film shortlisted for the 2022 Oscars) and Studio Syro (“Tales from Soda Island”, a series made entirely in Quill) in addition to the Virtual Animation collective.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER NEXT LAB? SUCCESS STORIES...OR NOT

We talk to two of the winning projects from the first edition ("Protocolo Flambé" by Rubén Fernández and "Going Down" by Joaquín Martínez), who will tell us about their experiences and how their way of working has changed, what projects they are developing and what new opportunities the methodology learnt at the workshop has opened up for them. We will also talk to Víctor Monigote, participant of this edition with the project "Wan", who will explain the difficulties he has faced during the workshop, the challenges he has overcome, and those he has not.

Dan Franke is co-founder of Studio Syro, a virtual animation studio with an international team of designers, animators and developers who use the VR painting tool Quill to produce experiences both inside and outside of virtual reality. Dan will tell us about the advantages, but also the complexities, of producing animation with a production company model that is at the forefront of using the most innovative creative tools

NEW TOOLS FOR STORYBOARDING AND ANIMATICS

There are new tools that make the storyboarding and animation process much richer, more creative and efficient and better connected to the rest of the production phases. This demo-talk will show this workflow in action. Daniel M. Lara will give a live demo and will then be joined by greats such as Enrique Gato and Daniel Martínez Peixe, among others, to tell us about their experiences.

Within the Next Lab 2021 event, Dan Franke, one of the creators of Studio Syro, tells us about the experience of having a creative studio where the main tool is Quill. How they organize their work, what the clients think, what challenges they have faced, in short, the guts of what may be the model of the animation production company of the future.

Dan Franke is the Co-Founder of Studio Syro, a virtual animation studio with an international team of designers, animators, and developers who use the VR Quill painting tool to produce handcrafted experiences both in and outside of VR. He is currently directing "Tales from Soda Island," the first virtual reality series created entirely in virtual reality.

PRODUCING A SHORT FILM IN VR: THE REMEDY WITH DANIEL MARTIN PEIXE

In the second Next Lab talk, Daniel Martín Peixe tells us about his experience producing a short film in VR: ‘The Remedy’.

Character animator at Walt Disney Studios since November 2009. With twenty years of experience in the animation industry as a traditional 2D and CGI animator in a variety of projects and locations around the world. He worked on the critically acclaimed feature film "Tangled" (2010), as well as such Oscar-winning films as "Zootopia" (2016) and "Moana" (2016). Mentor of the professional online workshop Animsquad since 2017. Writer, director and creator of the virtual reality short film "The Remedy" (2019), created entirely with the virtual reality application "Quill".

Goya Award for the best animated short film for “Alike” in 2016. He carries out his professional activity in three areas: teaching with his school Pepe School Land, creating his own short films and finally designing and developing animation tools such as Blender Grease Pencil, KeyMesh and EasyRigging.
